Hitchhiking Through Morocco 2017

Hitchhiking through Morocco

After finishing my last university assignment, I wanted to experience one more adventure before starting my first job. So I decided to fly to Morocco with a friend and explore the country by hitchhiking.

From Munich to Nador

On the way to Morocco
The Start in January

First I had to hitchhike to Munich to meet my friend there. Since it was January, the beginning of our adventure was quite tough. But since I love hitchhiking, I enjoyed it anyway.

The ride to Munich went relatively smoothly, except for one unexpected situation: I missed an important exit and then had serious trouble getting back towards Munich. All the cars were heading to Stuttgart, but I needed to go south. Luckily I only had to wait about three hours there before a truck driver picked me up. After that I could continue without further problems and met my friend in the evening.

The next day we hitchhiked to Frankfurt, where we stayed through Couchsurfing. The host was very kind and helpful — he even drove us to the airport and we were able to fly to Morocco.

Nador, Morocco
Nador and the Coastal Road to Tétouan

We flew to Nador in northern Morocco and met some people my friend had connected with through Couchsurfing. The weather was rainy, but the atmosphere, architecture, and different culture were incredibly beautiful. We drank traditional Moroccan tea with lots of sugar.

From Nador we continued via Al Hoceima to Tétouan. This route was breathtaking and we could admire the sea the entire time.

From Tétouan we continued to Chefchaouen, the so-called "blue city". There we met a man who became our city guide.

Fès and Casablanca

Fès – an Exhausting City

Then we continued to Fès. There I felt very exhausted and the stay was at times really difficult. We also had problems with people who tried to rob us. Luckily we only lost a few minor things and nothing truly important.

Casablanca, Morocco

After Fès we continued to Casablanca, where we spent time with two very kind men. The Hassan II Mosque was particularly impressive.

Marrakech

The Final Destination – a City Full of Life

After enjoying Casablanca, we traveled to our final destination: Marrakech. There too we met a man who became our city guide. This city was completely different from the cities in northern Morocco. There was a very African atmosphere, and the weather was sunny and pleasant.

There were many markets and stalls. I particularly loved this city. Unfortunately we eventually had to fly back to Central Europe, but this experience will stay with me forever.
